Boating Means Business
Recreational boating has become one of the fastest growing leisure activities in Ohio, which comes as no surprise to the more than 400,000 registered Ohio boat owners.
Ohio is a boating playground rich with water resources. There's an abundance of freshwater streams, lakes, and inland waterways, which provide endless opportunities for boating enthusiasts.
Whether it's walleye fishing on Lake Erie or canoeing on the Little Miami River, these leisure activities fuel an important and vital industry to the Buckeye state.
Boating results in a positive economic impact not only to local waterfront communities, but to the state, too. Boating's direct economic impact totals more than $700 million annually and it's indirect impact adds another $700 million. That means boating's combined economic impact contributes $1.4 billion annually to the state's economy. That makes recreational boating one of Ohio's largest industries.
And the good news is that industry experts are predicting continued growth and prosperity well into the future.
A variety of employment opportunities
Boating creates a variety of different jobs, some you may be aware of and others that you may not have even considered. Today only a fraction of workers in the marine industry actually work on the water in boatyards, on docks, or aboard large commercial vessels.
A variety of people are needed to work at all levels in the marine industry. Currently there is a demand for qualified professionals ranging from skilled workers to managers with advanced degrees (technicians, general and marina managers, sales representatives, craftsmen, retail store managers, etc.).
Many small to medium size employers make up Ohio's marine industry, and the Buckeye State is home to more than 450 marinas, boat dealerships, accessory stores, and service companies. In addition, there are over 140 different manufacturers of boats, trailers, engines, and other marine related products. It is estimated that Ohio's boating industry employs 8,000 seasonal, part-time, and full-time workers. There might be a career opportunity that's just right for you.
