Stay Afloat

This is boating's most important safety rule. Wearing a life jacket is both the easiest and safest thing a boater can do. It can make up for a lot of mistakes. If you end up in the water, your life vest will keep you afloat. Life Vests and Jackets are sometimes called PFD, which means, Personal Flotation Device.

Type I PFDs, or off-shore life jackets, are most effective. These large, puffy vests provide excellent flotation.
Type II PFDs, or near-shore life vests, are the kind most of us know best - a tube of canvas-covered, foamlike material you drape around your neck and tie or clip together in front..
Type III PFDs, also called flotation aids, are the most comfortable of the wearable PFDs. These slim vests wrap around the entire torso and keep you floating in an upright position. Some models double as fishing vests.
