Choosing the right boat

Because boating is a social activity, the family or close friends should be invited to participate in the adventure and excitement of choosing the boat. And it is an adventure. There are many, many different types and models of boats. Exploring the various models that meet your requirements until you find that "dream boat" is an exciting process for everyone. There are some simple steps to follow in finding the right boat.

First, ask what activities you and the "crew" most expect to enjoy with your new boat. This will identify the general type and style of boat for you. For example, do you want to sail or is a power boat your interest? Will you do a lot of fishing or primarily water skiing and cruising? Do you desire overnight accommodations or something best suited for just daytime outings. Remember, the majority of boats are multi-functional, Try a personal watercraft for exhilerating action!meaning the same boat could be a fishing boat in the morning and a ski boat that afternoon. But, many boats are designed for a single purpose. A utility-type fishing boat isn't likely to please a family with daughters who want plush reclining seats to lay-back in while working on a tan! So, it is important to make a list, even if it's long at first, of all the "must haves." You will work the list down with plenty of "can do withouts" along the way. But your list will be your initial guide to which boats and models you'll want

to be looking at and which will clearly waste your time. In addition, the more definitive you can be about what you want in your boat, the more others can help and advise you.

Second, determine the monthly budgets you are willing to allocate to boat ownership. Design and price will be the two overriding considerations during your adventure to choosing the right boat. While it might be exciting to climb a board a large motor yacht selling for a six-figure price, if your budget says "buy a small family runabout" as more than 75% of all Ohio boaters do, concentrate on boats that fit this criteria.Experience the boating lifestyle! There are plenty of brands and models to see in virtually every price range. Set you budget and generally stick to it. But, don't give up a true necessity for a few dollars now which will cost you inconvenience later. And remember, boating is a lifestyle. You're certain to be inviting guest aboard from time to time so plan a little extra room for them, too.

For more "research", talk to people who already enjoy the boating lifestyle for their personal selection tips; visit local boat dealers for expert advice and informational brochures; plan to attend the major boat shows held twice a year; pick up a few boating magazines at the newsstand or library; and surf the Internet.
